5 Comforting Indian Foods for a Baby With a Cough
What to feed a baby who's coughing and doesn't feel like eating β five soft, soothing recipes, plus what to avoid and the signs that mean it's time to call the doctor.
When a baby has a cough, food can't cure it β the goal is hydration, gentle nourishment, and textures soft enough not to irritate a sensitive throat. For babies 6 months and older already on solids, soft khichdi, thin dal soup, mashed vegetable soups, and smooth porridges all work well. Offer small, frequent amounts rather than full meals, and skip anything spicy, dry, or hard to swallow.
Seek immediate medical care if you notice
Rapid breathing, wheezing, or chest retractions (ribs pulling in while breathing)
A bluish or pale tint around the lips, tongue, or nail beds
High fever, extreme lethargy, or refusing fluids for multiple feeds in a row
Continuous, non-stop coughing fits that lead to vomiting or breathlessness
When a baby is coughing, eating often becomes a battle nobody wins. The goal isn't finding a food that "cures" the cough β nothing does that. The goal is keeping your baby hydrated, gently nourished, and comfortable, with textures soft enough that swallowing doesn't turn into another coughing fit.
All five recipes below are for babies 6 months and older who have already started solids. For babies under 6 months, breast milk or formula should remain their sole source of nutrition.
Soft Moong Dal Khichdi (Ultra-Soft)
Why it helps: Combines easy-to-digest carbohydrates with gentle protein. The porridge-like texture slides down without scratching an irritated throat.
Ingredients: 2 tbsp rice, 2 tbsp yellow moong dal, 1Β½ cups water, a tiny pinch of turmeric, a few drops of ghee.
How to prepare:
Wash the rice and dal thoroughly.
Pressure cook with the water and turmeric until very mushy (4β5 whistles).
Mash completely with a spoon or potato masher.
Stir in a few drops of ghee and serve lukewarm, not hot.
Clear Moong Dal Soup (Dal Ka Paani)
Why it helps: Delivers hydration and light nourishment on the days your baby refuses anything heavier.
Ingredients: 2 tbsp yellow moong dal, 1ΒΌ cups water, a pinch of roasted cumin (jeera) powder.
How to prepare:
Pressure cook the washed dal with water until completely soft.
Whisk well and strain through a fine sieve to collect a thin, golden soup.
Stir in the roasted cumin powder and offer in small sips.
Steamed Carrot & Pumpkin Mash Soup
Why it helps: Gentle on inflamed airways while still delivering real vitamins and fluids.
Ingredients: Β½ small carrot (peeled, diced), a small slice of yellow pumpkin, 1 cup water.
How to prepare:
Steam or boil the carrot and pumpkin until fork-tender.
Smooth Ragi or Oats Porridge
Why it helps: Warm and soothing β it can coat the throat and temporarily ease coughing bouts triggered by swallowing.
Ingredients: 1Β½ tbsp sprouted ragi flour or powdered rolled oats, ΒΎ cup water.
How to prepare:
Mix the flour into cold water first, whisking out any lumps.
Ghee-Mashed Rice with Warm Lentil Broth
Why it helps: A classic comfort staple β steady energy, extremely bland, and non-irritating.
Cook the rice until completely soft, then mash thoroughly.
What to avoid during a cough
Strong home spices β black pepper, raw ginger juice, or heavy ajwain kadhas can irritate a delicate throat and trigger gagging in infants.
Chunky or dry foods β hard biscuits, whole grains, or thick nuts risk choking or triggering a coughing spasm.
Force-feeding β a reduced appetite during illness is normal. Offer small, frequent spoonfuls instead of pushing a full meal.
Honey, for any child under 12 months β the risk of infant botulism makes this a hard no, cough remedy or not.
A gentle reminder
Your baby won't always feel like eating when they're unwell, and that's okay. Small, frequent offerings of soft, warm food β alongside plenty of milk feeds β do far more good than trying to get through a full bowl in one sitting.

Soft, warm, easy-to-swallow foods β like moong dal khichdi, thin dal soup, mashed vegetable soups, or a smooth ragi/oats porridge β work well for babies 6 months and older who are already on solids. Focus on hydration and gentle nourishment rather than a specific 'cure' food.
